Weekend Box Office: 'Avengers' Breaks Another Record, Hits $1 Billion

The playbook can be officially thrown out now. When "The Avengers" smashed records and earned a massive $207.1 million last weekend domestically, that just about killed any chance of predicting what the movie would do in its second weekend. When a movie beats "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" by about $40 million opening weekend, all bets are off.

"The Avengers" posted another fantastic weekend, earning about $103.2 million in its second weekend in theaters. That would be a terrific weekend even for a movie in its first week, so the fact that "Avengers" hit that total after already being out a week is unprecedented. "Avengers" is, in fact, the first movie in history to hit $100 million domestically in its second weekend.

The movie should also pass $1 billion globally in just 19 days, roughly matching the pace of "Avatar." Will "Avengers" be able to give Cameron's epic a challenge for top grossing movie ever?

Meanwhile, Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows" opened a little softer than expected, earning $28.8 million as opposed to the expected $35-40 million. The new Johnny Depp film may have been hurt by lackluster reviews and by the continued might of "The Avengers."

None of the rest of the movies in theaters passed $10 million on the weekend, though all have been in theaters at least three weeks. Those include "Think Like a Man" in third place with $6.5 million, and "The Hunger Games" in fourth with $4.3 million. "The Lucky One" took fifth with $4 million, pushing the unlucky "The Five-Year Engagement" to sixth place.
